Yes there are mermaids at St Mary’s!
A professor at Liverpool University has been in touch with surprising news that we have mermaid tiles in the chancel. They date from the fourteenth century - so really very old. Quite why mermaids appear when we are so far from the sea is a mystery. The professor is very excited saying “ You have so many mermaids” and is doing some more research on our behalf.
The first picture is a modern reproduction to give an idea of what to look for.
The second picture shows one of our tiles in the chancel.
The third picture (including my feet!) shows where the tile are situated - between the two memorial stones in the centre of the tiled area. There seems to be at least 4 mermaids.
